The Coma Cluster at γ-ray energies: multifrequency constraints
نویسنده
چکیده
The Coma cluster exhibits evidence for a high-energetic non-thermal particle population. At frequencies > 1GHz recent radio halo observations confirm a significant spectral steepening of the volume-integrated emission. We calculate the volume-averaged high-energy spectrum due to inverse Compton scattering off the CMB radiation field and non-thermal bremsstrahlung according to an exponential cutoff in the electron spectrum as deduced from the radio observations. The synchrotron radiation from secondary pairs, created from the decay of charged mesons produced in hadronic pp-interactions, is found to set significant constraints on the energy content of relativistic hadrons in Coma. This limits the maximum flux at high energies. Our findings support a low ratio of relativistic hadron to thermal energy density. Predictions for Coma’s high energy emission are discussed in the light of current and expected abilities of upcoming γ-ray instruments.

Coma revealed as an extended hard X-rays source by INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI
We report the INTEGRAL/IBIS observations of the Coma Cluster in the hard X-ray/soft γ-ray domain.Since the Coma Cluster appears as an extended source, its global intensity and significance cannot be directly extracted with standard coded mask analysis. We used the method of imaging the extended sources with a coded mask telescope developed by Renaud et al. (2006).The imaging capabilities and th...
متن کاملA Suzaku Search for Non-thermal Emission at Hard X-ray Energies in the Coma Cluster
The brightest cluster radio halo known resides in the Coma cluster of galaxies. The relativistic electrons producing this diffuse synchrotron emission should also produce inverse Compton emission that becomes competitive with thermal emission from the ICM at hard X-ray energies. Thus far, claimed detections of this emission in Coma are controversial (e.g., Fusco-Femiano et al. 2004; Rossetti & ...
متن کاملCOMPTEL observations of the γ-ray blazars 3C 454.3 and CTA 102 during the CGRO mission
We have investigated the MeV behaviour of the γ-ray blazars 3C 454.3 and CTA 102 by analyzing all COMPTEL observations of this sky region during the complete CGRO mission. Both sources are detected by COMPTEL at the upper COMPTEL energies, although their flux estimates may be uncertain by possible minor contributions of nearby unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources. While CTA 102 was only detected at...
متن کاملLimits on Magnetic Fields and Relativistic Electrons in the Coma Cluster from Multifrequency Observations
Relativistic electrons, seen in the large diffuse radio halo of the Coma cluster of galaxies, should scatter background photons to higher energies. We calculate the inverse Compton contributions from the microwave background, from the local radiation field of elliptical galaxies and from the thermal X-ray emission of the intra cluster medium to the different observed energy bands, and draw rest...
متن کاملNeutrinos and Gamma Rays from Galaxy Clusters
The next generation of neutrino and γ-ray detectors should provide new insights into the creation and propagation of high-energy protons within galaxy clusters, probing both the particle physics of cosmic rays interacting with the background medium and the mechanisms for high-energy particle production within the cluster. In this paper we examine the possible detection of γ-rays (via the GLAST ...
